I'm not a huge Tom Cruise fan. Probably because no matter what character he plays, he tends to always seem like the same person. However, I was coaxed into watching this movie, so I did.
I saw The Last Samurai today. It was an okay movie. Although I felt some of the battle scenes seemed to be longer than necessary.
So in order not to spoil the movie for other people who (like me), watch 'popular' movies years after everyone else does, I will only reveal the basic plot.
Plot:
Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) plays a captain disillusioned by his experieces during his time serving General Custer. He is employed by the Japanese to train their army to quell a samurai rebellion led by Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe). After being captured, Algren is held captive by the samurai and slowly begins to learn that sometimes the line between enemies and allies is not as clearly drawn as it might seem.
Best thing about the movie:
The movie managed to capture the essence of the peaceful rural life of 19th century Japan. It also provided an insight to the principals that the samurai hold so steadfastly. The child actors are amazing.
Worst thing about the movie:
The emperor! The guy can't act. Plus, his character really was not properly developed. He should have potrayed a boy-man struggling to do right by his people. Weakened by his council and yet too afraid to listen to his heart. He came nowhere near this.
A quote I liked:
Katsumoto: You believe a man can change his destiny?
Algren: I think a man does what he can, until his destiny is revealed.
You'll like this movie IF:

You'll like this movie IF:
- You like Tom Cruise.
- You love epic historical movies.
- You like watching hundreds of people on a battlefield being decapitated and impaled and slashed to death.
- You have a great person to watch it with (then the movie is only secondary).
